Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing - Book Summary

by Matthew Perry

'There's never been a more honest or raw memoir ... and it may just save lives' – Daily Mail
'Funny, fascinating, compelling ... also a wonderful read for fans of Friends' – The Times

"For all the sufferers put there. You know who you are."

In the book, Matthew opens up about his whole life, childhood career, and love life. The author has a dark sense of humour and sarcasm and he does make jokes as a defence mechanism.  Could it be more like Chandler Bing?

He knew the moment he read the script for Chandler that it was perfect for him. The book contains the details of how he got the role, and also about each session and his mental state.

He shares how his parents meet, and even though they were absolutely gorgeous together, they didn't last. As a baby, he and his mother had to move together. His mother was young and very beautiful "she was a star in every room she entered. And she's certainly the reason I'm funny." In the book, he shares in more depth his relations with his parents.

While growing up he started to drink at an early age, after understanding that drinking makes you happy, and years later he started to use drugs, after an accident while shooting a movie, they called a ".... doctor, who came in my trailer and handed me a single pill in a plastic package.....I think if I'd never taken it, none of the next three decades would have gone the way they did.....".
After that, the usage began to increase and he ended up using over fifty pills a day due to tolerance.
He was in many different rehab centres, and in one of them, he was saved by his friend who rushed him to the hospital due to gastrointestinal issues where he was in a coma for 2 weeks.

In his love life, he had numerous escapades and had some great relationships but he ended up pushing the person away because of his low self-esteem.
One of my favourites is the one with Julia Roberts, how they started to talk it was so sweet and romantic it's so sad that it didn't last.

The memoir ends on a positive note "Watching the ocean, I find myself most days filled with not just longing, but also peace and gratitude and a deeper understanding of  just what I've been through, and where I am now."

I do recommend reading the book to have the whole image and also in there you will find some personal nice pictures.
